veganmofo - kitchen tour

#vgnmf15 Day 13 is all about touring our kitchen.

Here goes! And since this is a tour, I will let the pics speak. I introduce you to the kitchen that created, wrote, tested and edited two vegan cookbooks:

Back of my kitchen:

Front of my kitchen:

Side view of the kitchen:

My kitchen cookbook library is not part of the kitchen, but I do need to do research, right? Of the 300 cookbooks shown, 250 are vegan and the rest are non-vegan, for research. The small tabs on the bottom of the books is my system of categorization.

Note that this did not happen overnight. It has been in the making over the past 15 years.

Please understand, I feel it is my moral obligation to support vegan cookbook authors. That is exactly what I tell my husband. #truthtalk

  9. Great cookbook collection. I am curious to learn more about your categorization/organization system. I also like to support vegan authors but with so many vegan cookbooks these days, it is hard to keep up!

    1. I know what you mean! It is really wonderful to have so much choice now regarding cookbooks, but there are too many authors now to support all of them, unlike in the olden days when there were just a few. We get to be very choosy now.

My collection is very simply organized. I tried doing it in the Dewey decimal way, but that only works for non-cookbooks (the other part of our library) since we now have so many to catalog under that one "cookbook" section. I've also tried doing it by author and subject, but then there always came the time that I didn't remember the name of an author or wasn't sure what category the book I was looking for would be in.

Therefore, I'm now organizing them by the first initial of the title. For instance, I have three books that start with the letter "B" and they get denoted by "B.1" (for the first book I acquire) then "B.2" for the second I acquire, etc. I keep a catalog notebook where I write down these designations.

I really can't classify them completely alphabetically since I would have to redo the system every time I'd add to the collection. I just tack the new book to the end of the list in that letter order.

This works for me since I actually remember the titles of books and when it comes time for looking for the book, it is easier to locate. In the catalog, I will also boldly represent INDIAN or MEXICAN for books that have similar titles but start with a different letter.

The only exception to this are the RAW cookbooks; I cluster those under "R" because when I want to make a raw week I don't want to have to search all over the shelves for a raw book.
